U-16 Div. 2 leauge final St.Aidans 4-8 Boyle 4-7
Congradulations to our u-16 panel of players, management and selectors on winning the dvision 2 league final, after beating Boyle in Ballyforan last saturday evening. this was an excellent game of football and credit must go to both teams for the standard they produced in stormy conditions.
The home team went in happier at the break as they lead 2-4 to 0-3.Paul Higgins (1-1), Cathal Kelly (0-1), Shane Byrne (0-1), Patrick Neary (0-1) and John Coyne (1-0) were on the score sheet however solid defending and a brilliant save from goalkeeper Ronan Kelly was also an impact on the score.
The second half proved action packed and very exciting. Matthew Coyle opened the scoring with a fine pointand John Coyne kicked 1-1 in succession to cancel out boyle,s goal and point that proceeded Coyles point. Nonetheless Boyle were not diseartened and and kicked 2-2 to level the score, 3-6 each
Paul Higgins and John Coyne raised a white flag each side of a Boyle point to us a one point advantage. Boyle then scored a cracking goal with a minute to go and at this stage everyone was predicting Boyle to claim the title. however goalpoacher John Coyne was in the right place at the right time to complete his hat trick of goals and give Aidans victory by the narrowest of margins.

Report from The Roscommon Champion

St. Brigid's make statement of intent
Ruby Oil senior football quarter-final
St. Brigid's 1-11 St. Aidan's 0-5
Venue: Hyde Park
THE real championship has begun. Much like the World Cup the league stages of the senior football championship have been exposed as an unreliable guide to the business end of the competition. Strokestown and St. Aidan's were probably the two most impressive team in the group matches but like Spain and Argentina they flattered to deceive and are out before the semi-final stage.
In contrast, the holders St. Brigid's stumbled out of their group, losing to St. Faithleach's, and it appeared the loss of many of last year's key figures would scupper their prospects of retaining the title
Last Saturday in Hyde Park the champions sent out a statement of intent: it will take a good team to prise the Fahey Cup from their grasp. Unlike any other team in the county the Kiltoom club has the resources to cope with the injury crisis which has afflicted them this year.
The loss of Darragh Donnelly, Ian and Senan Kilbride and Shane Curran, among others, has to leave its mark but Brigid's could still spring players of the calibre of last year's captain Brendan 'Dixie' O'Brien and Donal O'Connor from the bench.
If it was a different Brigid's last Saturday, it was an unrecognisable St. Aidan's. The Ballyforan club has the players to win a county title and the supply line is continuing to produce high-quality footballers.
Yet last Saturday they gave a totally untypical Aidan's performance, lacking in passion and determination. The only explanation is that the expectation this could be their year got to them and perhaps they have developed a mental 'hang up' playing Brigid's. Yes, Aidan's hit the crossbar three times but that doesn't disguise the chasm in class between the teams in the second-half.
Anthony Cunningham's team started well and Frankie Dolan converted frees in the second and seventh minutes, the latter a marvellous score from the right sideline. Aidan's hit their best patch of the match between the 12th and 17th minutes. Francie Grehan powered over a 45, Paddy Tiernan forced James Martin into a smart save when through on goal, Grehan equalised from play and Martin Connolly gave the Ballyforan team the lead from a free following a foul on Terence Kelly.
After three successive wides Karol Mannion curled a terrific equaliser from 40 metres inside the left post. David 'Jimmy Nail' O'Connor eased Brigid's ahead with points in the 26th and 30th minutes, the second after an incisive team move. Tiernan tapped over a goal chance just before half-time to suggest a tight second-half lay in store.
Yet within five minutes of the resumption the game was all but over. The industrious Mark O'Carroll's low-trajectory shot clawed over the bar and O'Connor hit another double, the second a cleanly-struck score from 30 metres after some intricate passing.
Eoin Mannion landed the score of the match in the 40th minute, a superb shot from the right sideline which never deviated from its course and landed over the black spot. The game was over even before Conor McHugh showed good composure to roll in a goal two minutes later after approach work from John Tiernan and O'Connor.
Grehan was unlucky to see his palmed effort go over rather than under the bar in the 44th minute for Aidan's only score of the half. The midfielder hit the crossbar with well-struck goal attempts in 50th and 57th minutes but was then send-off in injury-time for a second booking, a foul on Garvan Dolan.
The only scores in the last quarter were two O'Connor frees but Aidan's were awarded a penalty when James Coyne was brought down. When Connolly hit the crossbar and the rebound went wide it summed up Aidan's evening.
ST. BRIGID'S: James Martin; Enda Ruane, Padraig Kilcommins, Robbie Kelly; Eoin Mannion (0-1), Ger Aherne, Niall Grehan; Mark O'Carroll (0-1), Karol Mannion (0-1); Garvan Dolan, John Tiernan, Darragh Blaine; Conor McHugh (1-0), David O'Connor (0-6, four frees), Frankie Dolan (0-2, frees). Subs used: Brendan O'Brien for McHugh (48 mins), Donal O'Connor for Blaine (60 mins).
ST. AIDAN'S: Shane Gilligan; Mickey Cunniffe, James Kenny, Shay Galvin; Sean Higgins, Mark Higgins, Michael Connolly; Francie Grehan (0-3, one 45), Martin Connolly (0-1, free); Paddy Tiernan (0-1), Eamon McCormack, Martin Kenny; Terence Kelly, David Hoey, David Thompson. Subs used: James Coyne for Tiernan (41 mins), Eoin Henderson for M. Kenny (41 mins), Keith Waldron for Thompson (45 mins), Noel Galvin for Michael Connolly (48 mins).

Western Gaels fought back hard in the second half and two goals in quick succession brought them within one point of us however points from David Thompson, Mark Higgins, Sean Higgins, Eammon McCormack and Francis grehan(2) saw us close out the game which ends our league campaign for 2006.

Ruby Oil Roscommon Senior Football Championship Group C
St Aidan's 3-10 Castlerea 3-5
THE lights went out in Ballyforan on Saturday evening, but there was no shortage of power at Páirc Naomh Aodán. For that matter, passion, commitment, decent scores and a real edge weren't in short supply either. Welcome to championship 2006. It may have been a while in coming, but if we can have more games like this, the punters won't complain.
It certainly didn't lack incident. St Aidan's started at a mile a minute and were 1-3 to 0-0 up after 11 minutes. David Thompson, Paddy Tiernan and Martin Connolly all kicked fine early points. Tiernan then went on a mazy dribble, only to be denied what might have been the goal of the century by Geoffrey Claffey's save.
Then David Hoey (who unfortunately went off injured yet again, albeit in the closing stages) picked up a break at midfield, Martin Kenny picked up possession, and Martin Connolly banged in goal number one.
At that stage it looked like the 2003 champions might be "beat out the gate". But a Ger Heneghan free got them off the mark after 12 minutes, and despite fine cameos from Michael Connolly, Martin Connolly and Mickey Cunniffe, Castlerea weren't dead yet. Nigel Dineen was central in the build-up to their first goal, releasing Ger Heneghan for a well-taken strike from the left.
Enda Kenny added two fine points from play so remarkably, the sides were level after 28 minutes. Aidan's kicked seven first half wides by an injury time point from Ferdie Coyne left Frank Grehan's side a point to the good at the midpoint, 1-4 to 1-3.
The leaders made the better start to the second half, Francie Grehan taking over the freetaking duties to good effect. Terence Kelly's first-half contribution had been poor but the corner forward was about to come into his own. He nabbed Aidan's' second goal, flicking in Martin Connolly's delivery. It wasn't quite over, however, as Castlerea sub Sean Ryan fisted another high ball into the net. The hosts' protests that Ryan had been in the square fell on deaf ears, so it was very much game on.
Martin Connolly kicked two points to bring his tally to three, but in between, the aggro which was a feature of the game throughout game to a head. Referee Declan Hunt dished out six yellow cards over the hour, but the only red went to Castlerea's Cathal Dineen. The wing forward's sending-off was a mystery to most at the time, but it later emerged that the dismissal was for abusive language (or "giving out" as he termed it himself when asked by a Castlerea mentor).
With nine minutes remaining, however, we had goal number three for the trailing side. Following Ger Heneghan's cross from the left, Sean Ryan knocked the ball down to Nigel Dineen, who struck it well. Just as a chink of light opened up for Castlerea, however, Terence Kelly struck again, latching onto a breaking ball before delivering a thunderous shot to the net.
Garry Tiernan countered with a point for the north Roscommon men, but notwithstanding a successful Heneghan í45, it was Aidan's who finished stronger. Claffey made two fine saves, one from Paddy Tiernan and the other from Martin Kenny, so the centre forward made do with a point. Captain Terence Kelly, whose two goals had proved so crucial, closed the scoring with two points. The first came after a Hoey run, the second was an easy free. It was about the only thing about this game that was straightforward.
ST. AIDAN'S: David Gilligan; Mickey Cunniffe, James Kenny, Shay Galvin; Sean Higgins, Mark Higgins, Michael Connolly; Francie Grehan (0-1, free), Martin Connolly (1-3, 0-1 free); David Hoey, Martin Kenny (0-1), Paddy Tiernan (0-1), Terence Kelly (2-2, 0-1 free), David Thompson (0-1), Ferdie Coyne (0-1). Subs used: Eamon McCormack for Coyne (h-t), Eoin Henderson for Hoey (inj, 60 mins), Eamon Fallon for Galvin (60 mins).
CASTLEREA ST. KEVIN'S: Geoffrey Claffey; Padraig Duignan, Dara Silke, Shane Raftery; Garry Tiernan (0-1), Declan Murphy, Michael Killelea; Michael Finneran, David Scahill; Dermot Lyons, Ger Heneghan (1-2, 0-1 free, 0-1 45), Cathal Dineen; Nigel Dineen (1-0), Seamus Heneghan, Enda Kenny (0-2). Subs used: Martin Raftery for S Raftery (15 mins, temp), Seán Ryan (1-0) for Lyons (h-t), John Duggan for Finneran (44 mins), Ronan Curran for Heneghan (58 mins).
Referee: Declan Hunt.

Kelly praises St Aidan’s contribution to Gaelic games
By Ian Cooney (Roscommon Hearld)

The great tradition associated with St Aidan’s GAA Club was recognised by former president of the GAA Sean Kelly when he officially opened the club’s grounds in Ballyforan on Sunday last. The development, which includes floodlighting, a modern gymnasium and a second pitch for juveniles, was described as a great asset for the club’s future generations of players.

The official opening was also attended by St. Aidan’s club officers and members of Roscommon County Board. The blessing of the clubrooms and pitch was performed by Very Rev. Fr. Francis Beirne, PP, Tisrara.

The day’s celebrations kicked off with a challenge match between St. Aidan’s and Clann na nGael, a game won by the home side.

Roscommon played Offaly in an intercounty challenge afterwards, a game which procured a one point victory for John Maughan’s men.

In his first official duty as former GAA President, Sean Kelly paid tribute to a “great parish”. He lauded the work in providing facilities which would cater for many GAA games in the years ahead.

“You have everything here now and the end result is a credit to St. Aidan’s GAA Club. This is the culmination of much hard work.

“There was always a healthy tradition here and this club has always been proud of what it has achieved,” said Mr Kelly.

Recalling some of the club’s great successes in Scór and the various county titles won on the playing fields around Roscommon and Ireland, Mr Kelly paid tribute to the many great players from the club that had worn the county jersey with distinction.

“The club realised that it needed extra facilities here to meet the demands and the popularity of our games.

“I think it is only fitting that the clubrooms have been named after the club’s late chairman, John Galvin. He epitomised the voluntary effort that is here in abundance. This development will keep the club going for many years.”

Acknowledging the expertise in the club which saved thousands of euro, Mr Kelly said that the GAA was proud of St. Aidan’s achievements.

He also predicted a bright future for Roscommon County Board and the county’s senior football team.

“The difficulties of the 2005 are in the past.

“Everyone is looking forward to a brighter future. I hope the heartbeat of this club will be beating hard for many years to come,” he concluded.

County Board Chairman Michael Maguire congratulated St. Aidan’s on their fantastic new facilities.

“St. Aidan’s has moved the GAA in Roscommon into the 21st century. The county needs facilities like this. The effort has been incredible and there has been so many elements to it.

“I thank St. Aidan’s for their contribution to the GAA in Roscommon. While they were fundraising for their own development, they still found the time to sell tickets for the county board’s new draw. I hope you will have many happy years here,” he commented.

St. Aidan’s Chairman John Carty welcomed the large gathering and paid tribute to all those who had worked so hard to make the new facilities possible.

“It’s our duty to hand these facilities on to the next generation. What a fine job we have done for that generation. I hope everyone will benefit from this development and that we have many years of enjoyment on the playing fields.”

Welcoming Sean Kelly and his wife Juliette, he praised Mr Kelly’s foresight in bringing the GAA into modern times. The chairman also paid tribute to the role of local politicians, especially Deputy Michael Finneran. Mr Carty also thanked the local media for promoting the official opening over the last few weeks.

“I want to welcome the Galvin family. I think it’s only fitting that we are launching the clubrooms in John Galvin’s honour. He did trojan work and his input was second to none.

“We have a beautiful park here and it hasn’t come easy.

“The costings were in the region of €400,000. We got the job done for much less than that. That emphasises the voluntary input from this parish.”

Mr Carty also thanked Parks Secretary, David Kelly, club officers, the ladies committee, the lotto and bingo committee and everyone who helped with fundraising for the project.

Appreciation was also expressed to MC Eamonn Fallon and the Castlerea Brass and Reed Band. He added that the local national and secondary schools would have access to the facilities whenever they wanted.

“That’s where the football starts with the coaching of the skills. I want to thank the teachers for promoting our games at all times.”

In a special blessing to mark the official opening, Fr. Francis Beirne acknowledged the club’s jubilee year which marks the 50th anniversary of the club’s formation.

“We are dedicating these marvellous facilities to the service of this community.

“May they foster the physical and mental well-being of the local and wider community and be a place where the art and skill of playing Gaelic games will be duly nurtured for people of all abilities, class and creed.

“We think of those who devote endless voluntary hours of their time and skill working relentlessly to enhance the quality of life for others. These people are opening up improved opportunities for all age groups to enjoy themselves and participate in a wide variety of social, educational and sporting activities.”

Thanking the development committee for their foresight in bringing the facilities to fruition, Fr. Beirne said that they would bring enjoyment, fulfilment and a co-operative spirit to Gaelic games.

“I hope these facilities inspire young people to be agile and creative, and to use their leisure time productively and constructively.

“May they be respected and instrumental in building a united community as well as promoting honourable sportsmanship,” he concluded.
